Soundscape Editor Version 5.5:

For Soundscape 32/16 and R.Ed users…
…and for SSL Soundscape Mixer users!

To all Soundscape users:

Version 5.0 of the Soundscape Editor introduced the “Native Soundscape Unit” concept.

In addition to the Soundscape 32/16 or R.Ed unit(s), and provided that a Mixpander was present, virtual units could be added. These units used the host PC to record and play back audio to and from PC mounted hard disks via the Mixpander’s audio streaming channels, thus providing more tracks.

While the DSP-powered Soundscape hardware provides the native units with the mixing muscle and latency-free operation expected from Soundscape, editing on these units is performed using the host PC’s processor.

The native units concept has proven extremely reliable, and very successful with Soundscape DAW users. In addition to the higher combined track count, it offers a considerable speed advantage when it comes to file transfers between Soundscape and other platforms.

Version 5.5 of the Sounscape Editor is the next evolutionary stage: it is now possible to run the Soundscape Editor entirely natively!

This means that a Soundscape 32/16 or R.Ed is no longer necessary to enjoy the Soundscape Editor experience. Instead, the software will run on any suitable PC equipped with an SSL Soundscape Mixpander and compatible Solid State Logic XLogic Alpha-Link or Soundscape iBox 24/48/64 unit (i.e., an Alpha-Link or iBox featuring the Soundscape Expansion Bus port).

A Soundscape format hard disk (SDisk) also needs to be mounted on the PC for recording and playback (the Soundscape Editor can now directly format PC-mounted hard disks as long as they are not already formatted for Windows).

One word of caution though: at present the Editor still relies on the Soundscape 32/16 (or R.Ed) hardware for most of its sync capabilities (only the ASIO Positioning Protocol is supported without a Soundscape 32).

At present, the major advantage of running a multiple unit system with hardware units and native units is to have access from a native unit to all the inputs, outputs and audio formats available on the iBox 24/48/64 and SSL Alpha-Link unit(s).

The Editor Version 5.5 also includes a number of enhancements over previous versions:

- More Mixpander busses and streams (up to 64, dynamically allocated).
- Formatting and recovery of PC-mounted native drives.
- Mouse wheel operation of some mixer controls (level and send faders and panners).
- More Tools per Toolbar page.
- Melodyne VST plug-in support (NB: not Melodyne Bridge).

However, V5.5 must be considered an intermediary release. The big news for now is native operation, but the development team is still hard at work, preparing the future of the SSL Soundscape Editor. Already, a considerable amount of work has been made “under the hood”, which will show in future releases.

In the meantime, Version 5.5 of the SSL Soundscape Editor is free to owners of an Editor V5.xx password.

Mixpander/Alpha-Link and Mixpander/iBox users:

You can purchase a V.5x password to run the Soundscape Editor on your existing Soundscape hardware. Naturally, all plug-in passwords already purchased for the Mixpander will be recognized by the Editor.

Additionally, SSL/Sydec will offer you the XPro Time Module password, enabling the Time Strech/Compress, Sample Rate Conversion and Pitch Shift tools in the Soundscape Editor.

The Editor will offer the same functionality and performance as the SSL Soundscape Mixer software in terms of mixing and providing I/O to other audio programs. Mixer files created in the SSL Soundscape Mixer can be loaded in the Editor.

Please note that, compared to the Mixer software, Mixer building and configuration are also facilitated in the Editor, with four tools assignable to the mouse buttons (left and right button, with or without the Alt key).

Since you use your Soundscape hardware as an input and output system for your sequencer of choice, we know that you are used to that program. However, we invite you to check the capabilities of the Soundscape Editor in the relevant product pages of our website:

Please be assured that the capabilities of native Soundscape systems will be enhanced in the future. At present the main synchronization functionalities (MTC, MIDI Clock, and the sync card options: LTC, VITC, BITC and 9-Pin) require a Soundscape 32. However, for Cubase/Nuendo users, ASIO Positioning Protocol is functional in the Soundscape Editor for native Soundscape units.

NOTE: If you are a Cubase or Nuendo user, the Editor can even be used as an automation system for the Soundscape Mixer, provided that the Editor is used as the Master when using Soundscape automation, since the Steinberg software has to be the sync slave when using APP.

In the Soundscape Editor, your mixer moves can be recorded to dedicated Automation Tracks (up to 128, each one containing all types of data required by a single mixer column):

The resulting automation data can then be edited using dedicated tools:
