Product details
Mixpander
With five (Mixpander|5) or nine (Mixpander|9) of the latest Motorola DSPs on-board complemented by ultra fast-memory and the ability to handle a huge number of audio signals and connections, the Mixpander hardware audio engine delivers all the power you need to exploit the full capabilities of the Soundscape Mixer software.
A single Mixpander provides:
- Up to 64 external inputs* and 64 external outputs* via the connected iBox.
* The number of external inputs and outputs depends on the iBox model. The iBox 64-MADI-TA, iBox 64-MADI-T, iBox 64-MADI-S, iBox 64-MADI-SA, iBox 64-MADI-A and iBox 64-MADI-AA provide 64 inputs and outputs. The iBox 48-TA, iBox 48-SA and iBox 48-AA provide 48 inputs and outputs. The iBox 24-S provides 24 inputs and outputs. - 32 internal busses to route signals freely between different parts of the fully configurable mixer.
- Up to 64 audio streams (subject to sample rate) that are available as inputs and outputs to all Windows applications such as MIDI+Audio sequencers or virtual instruments.
- Enough processing power to run huge mixers with dozens of instances of exclusive, Soundscape format DSP-powered plug-ins. This performance is delivered without taxing the CPU of the host PC, so you can completely forget the usual trade-off between the number of simultaneous effects you want to use and the number of audio tracks you need to record or play back. And because the Soundscape Mixer is essentially a hardware mixer with a software front-end, you do not need to worry about latency.
Soundscape Mixer software
The Soundscape Mixer software is powered by the on-board DSP based mixing engine. The Mixer’s architecture is the same as used for the high end Soundscape Digital Audio Workstations, adapted for the native environment: the “Stream” inserts, which can be placed anywhere in the Mixer, are available as audio inputs and outputs to Windows audio applications such as MIDI+Audio sequencers or software samplers. The Soundscape Audio Toolbox provides some essential building blocks for commercial standard mixes, with multi-function dynamics processors (gate, expansion, compression, and limiting), delay and delay based effects (chorus, flanger), and dither. Optional effects and processing plug-ins are available from other world renowned developers including Wave Mechanics, TC-Works, Dolby Laboratories Inc., Cedar Audio, Sonic Timeworks, Aphex Systems, Arboretum Systems, Spinaudio, Drawmer, and Acuma Labs.
iBox (several models available)
The iBox is a stylishly designed, 2U-high rackmountable unit. The aluminium front panel features controls for input/output routing, clock source and sample rate selection, metering and a headphone output. The back panel features the Soundscape Expansion Bus port for connection to the Mixpander, a pair of BNC connectors for WordClock and SuperClock input and output (and Video input on some models), MIDI In and Out ports (on some models) and the audio connections (several combinations of the MADI, ADAT, TDIF, AES-EBU and balanced analog formats are available, depending on model).
Since an iBox can also be used as a standalone format converter unit, two units can be linked to a single Mixpander. For instance, if a high number of analog inputs and outputs is required, two iBox 48-TA (each featuring 3 TDIF ports and 24 analog inputs and outputs) could be cascaded via their TDIF ports to provide a single Mixpander with 48 analogue inputs and outputs.
System configuration
While a single Mixpander provides sufficient power for most mixing situations, Mixpander bundles are a modular, expandable system. Any number of Mixpanders can be installed in the same host computer, limited only by the number of available PCI slots and IRQ numbers (Mixpander can share an IRQ). For instance, four Mixpanders and four iBox 64-MADI-TA could be installed for a total of 256 inputs and outputs to and from the host computer, 128 internal busses and 256 streams to and from Windows applications, with a staggering amount of DSP power. In short, whatever your demands, you can configure a Soundscape system to fulfil them. With the Soundscape Mixer software V4.0 or later, Mixtreme, Mixtreme 192 and Mixpander cards can also be combined within a single system. The cards run from a single instance of the Soundscape Mixer and all have access to any optional effects plug ins you have purchased. And just as for the high end Soundscape DAW systems, a hardware control surface can be used via Console Manager.
Extensive compatibility
Mixpander bundles are supported by true multi-client drivers (Multimedia and VST compatible ASIO drivers, WDM (Sonar) and GSIF (GigaStudio V2.5) drivers for Windows 2000/XP) and can be used simultaneously by any combination of Windows audio applications such as MIDI+Audio sequencers, software samplers and instruments or editing software.
