What's new in V4.2

Version 4.2 of the Soundscape Editor is all about more speed, more facilities and further enhancing Soundscape’s already exceptional ease of use. Many of the new features were implemented specifically to satisfy user requests. You asked for it, Sint-Niklaas* was listening…

*(by the way Sint-Niklaas is the Belgian name for Santa-Claus … how appropriate!).

There are many new features to talk about. But it all starts with a present…

It’s a new…

…Consolidation Process tool!

Mind you, it’s not just any Consolidation tool. This one is smart. It creates a new audio Take at the currently selected Sample Resolution by combining the audio referenced by all the selected Parts that are on the same virtual track and assigned to the same physical track. Parts on several virtual tracks assigned to several physical tracks can be processed simultaneously. Any volume curves, fades and crossfades are included in the new audio Takes. After processing, the tool automatically updates the Arrangement in order to present as few Parts as possible.

Oh and… it’s not just smart, it’s fast as well. Much faster than real time. In fact, you will be surprised by the speed.

Continuing with user requests, Sint-Niklaas brings you…

Seamless looping

The new Seamless Loop mode can be selected in the Record/Playback Setup window. Ideal for rehearsing instrumental or vocal parts on top of a loop. It is offered as an option because Time Code slave devices cannot be “pre-warned” of a loop in Time Code. When Soundscape is in seamless loop mode the Time Code is still trnasmitted continuously, not taking the loop into account. Set up the same loop in the slave device to keep it in sync. If the slave device does not have a loop mode, you can disengage the Seamless Loop mode in Soundscape. As usual with the Editor, you can have it your way.

There is more… in particular:

More busses

Four extra internal mixer busses take the total to thirty-six (Mixpander required).

In fact, with a Mixpander, Version 4.2 of the Editor also supports up to forty-eight bidirectional native streams. But this will only become effective with a forthcoming new Soundscape Device Driver.

Select Take(s) and Replace Take(s)

The Part Info window includes a new “Select Take(s)” button that allows you to select the Take referenced by the corresponding Part(s) in the SFile Manager. It can even select multiple Takes as long as they reside in the same SFolder.

When right-clicking a Take name in the SFile Manager, the pop-up menu includes a new “Replace Take(s)” option. This allows the selected Take to become the source Take for any selected Part(s) in the Arrangement (provided of course that the Take is at least as long as the longest selected Part(s).

When using the “Replace Take(s)” function, the name of the edited Part(s) can be updated automatically as well (see menu: Settings|Preferences|Arrangement|Replace Part name(s) as well when replacing “Take(s)”).

New Preferences submenu layout

The Soundscape Editor is highy customizable. This has resulted in a huge number of options listed under the “Preferences” submenu. In Version 4.2 this submenu has been divided in three subcategories to make it easier to navigate. The subcategories are called “General”, “Arrangement” and “Mixer”.

New Preference options

It’s not just the layout of the menu that has changed. New facilities are included as well, including (non-exhaustively):

- Auto convert imported WAV/BWF files to audio Takes: select this option to convert any imported files automatically, whether you import them using the (simplified) File menu or by clicking and dragging from Explorer.

- Auto Samplerate Convert Process Audio Takes when dragged into Arrangement: this is self-explanatory… drag e.g. a 96kHz Take into a 44.1kHz Arrangement and the appropriate Sample Rate conversion takes place automatically.

- Treat mixer element parameter changes as mixer file changes: that’s right, if you select that option the “Save Mix” function is enabled as soon as you change any parameter in the Mixer (not just when you change the Mixer’s routing or structure.

Which brings us neatly to the next new feature:

Auto Save

The Auto Save function backs up your current Arrangement and Mixer files to a PC logical drive. Set the Auto Save interval to any value between 0 minutes (Auto Save disabled) and 60 minutes (under menu: Settings|Preferences|General).
