Overview
Resulting from a collaboration between Dolby Laboratories Inc. and Sydec Audio Engineering, the Dolby Surround Encoder/Decoder plug ins suite brings full compatibility with the Dolby Pro Logic® surround sound standard to all Soundscape Digital Audio Workstations (Soundscape 32, Soundscape 16, R.Ed, SSHDR1-Plus) and DSP powered expansion cards (Mixpander, Mixtreme).
 The suite includes a 4-channel to stereo Encoder and a stereo to 4-channel Decoder for matrix LCRS encoding and decoding, and a Pink Noise Generator for speaker and room setup. These plug in elements can be inserted as required at any point in the Soundscape Mixer, which provides surround mixer strip configurations with surround panners as standard.
Dolby Surround is a phase-matrix encoding/decoding process that allows stereo program sources to carry four channels of information. Originally developed as a sound-with-picture format, it uses the LCRS configuration with three channels across the front (Left Center Right) and a fourth channel (Surround) reproduced by speakers to the sides and rear of the listening area.
Because Dolby Surround soundtracks are specially encoded during production and decoded on playback, producers can control the placement and movement of sounds to create a a remarkably realistic listening experience. Dolby Surround soundtracks also create a wider, more enveloping soundfield even when played in stereo.
